Key takeaways
- 8 to 53 passenger capacity
- Weddings, corporate and sports groups
- Coaster and coach are quote-only
Moving a group around Scotland takes more planning than booking a taxi. Whether it's a wedding party, a corporate team, a golf trip, a school or club outing, or a family reunion, the vehicle you choose affects the cost, the comfort and whether everyone arrives at the same time. This guide explains your options, from people carriers to minibuses and coaches, and how to pick the right one.
Group transport options at a glance
| Group size | Usual vehicle | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 4 | Estate car or standard MPV | Small families, couples with lots of luggage |
| 5 to 7 | MPV or premium MPV | Families, small golf groups, business teams |
| Up to 8 | Eight-seater van | Stag and hen parties, golf groups, wedding guests |
| Up to 16 | Executive minibus (on request) | Corporate groups, clubs, larger wedding parties |
| 17 and over | Coach or several minibuses (on request) | Conferences, school trips, large tours |
Always count luggage as well as people. Eight passengers with eight suitcases need more space than eight passengers going out for dinner. For golf trips, tell us the number of golf bags.
MPVs and people carriers
For groups of up to about seven, an MPV is usually the most comfortable and cost-effective option. Everyone travels together, you can chat on the way, and there's room for sensible luggage. A wheelchair-accessible vehicle and electric MPVs are available on request for groups who need them.
Eight-seater vans and minibuses
When a group is too big for one MPV, the choice is between splitting into two cars or taking one larger vehicle. One vehicle is almost always better: one pick-up time, one driver, no one left behind waiting for the second car.
Our eight-seater van and 16-seat executive minibus (on request) are the popular choices for:
- airport transfers for golf groups heading to St Andrews or Gleneagles
- wedding guests moving between the ceremony, reception and hotels
- corporate teams travelling to meetings, conferences and away days
- sports teams and supporters going to matches
- private day tours to Loch Lomond, Stirling or the Highlands

Coaches for large groups
For groups larger than a minibus can take, the next step up is a midi coach (often called a coaster, typically 20 to 30 seats), then a full-size coach. A coach is usually the answer especially for conferences, school trips and big events. Coaches are available on request, and we can arrange them alongside smaller vehicles, so VIPs or late arrivals can travel separately from the main group. See coach hire for details.
Group transport prices
Fares cover the whole vehicle, so the cost per person falls as the group grows. Guide fares from Edinburgh Airport:
| Destination | 7-seat MPV | 8-seat van |
|---|---|---|
| Edinburgh city centre | £63 | £70 |
| Glasgow city centre | £170 | £194 |
| St Andrews | £155 | £194 |
| Gleneagles | £192 | £194 |
An eight-seater van to the city centre works out at under £10 a head when it's full. Executive minibus and coach hire are available on request and quoted for each job, because the price depends on the date, the route and how long the driver stays with you. Planning tips for group travel
- Get the numbers right early. Numbers often change, but a rough count lets us hold the right vehicle.
- Share flight details for everyone. If people arrive on different flights, we can plan a single pick-up after the last landing or split the group across vehicles.
- Nominate one contact person. The driver needs one phone number that will definitely answer on the day.
- Plan realistic timings. Getting sixteen people and their bags into a vehicle takes longer than getting two. Build in 10 to 15 minutes at each stop.
- Think about the return. Evening events finish late. Book the return journey at the same time as the outward one.
- Tell us about special requirements. Wheelchair users, child seats, extra luggage or equipment all affect which vehicle we send.
Weddings
Scottish weddings often mean a ceremony in one place, a reception somewhere rural, and guests staying in hotels spread around Edinburgh or the countryside. A minibus shuttle between the hotels and the venue keeps everyone together and means nobody has to drive. Plan for a late return trip too, and share the timings with guests in advance so they know when the last run leaves.
Corporate groups
For conferences at the EICC in Edinburgh or the SEC in Glasgow, team away days and client visits, a dedicated vehicle keeps a group together and on time. Companies can arrange regular bookings through our corporate booking page. See also corporate travel.
Golf groups
Golf groups are one of the most common group bookings in Scotland, and the luggage is the tricky part. Tour bags don't fit in a standard boot alongside suitcases. For four golfers with clubs, an MPV is usually the minimum. For six to eight, the eight-seater van is the usual choice. See our golf transfers page and the Edinburgh Airport to St Andrews route.
