Edinburgh Airport to St Andrews: Full Transfer Guide

The good news is that three airports and a railway station sit within reach, and the drive from Edinburgh Airport is one of the easiest airport runs in Scotland. This guide covers every way to get from the airport to St Andrews, how long each takes, and what golfers and students should know before they book.

Which airport is closest to St Andrews?

On a map, Dundee Airport is closest, roughly 14 miles away across the Tay. It only has a handful of scheduled flights, though, so most visitors don't use it.

For almost everyone, the practical answer is Edinburgh Airport (EDI). It has far more routes, including direct flights from North America in the summer, and it's about 48 miles from St Andrews by road. Aberdeen and Glasgow airports also work, but both add well over an hour to the journey.

Edinburgh Airport to St Andrews: your options

Private transfer

A private car is the simplest option by a distance. Your driver tracks the flight, meets you in arrivals and takes you straight to the door of your hotel, guest house or halls. The route runs north over the Queensferry Crossing, up the M90 and then across Fife on the A92 and A91.

Train

There's no direct rail link. You'd take the tram or bus into Edinburgh, then a train from Edinburgh Waverley to Leuchars (roughly an hour), then a taxi or bus for the last six miles. It works for light travellers, but with luggage, and definitely with golf clubs, it's a lot of changes.

Bus

Buses run from Edinburgh to St Andrews but involve at least one change, and journey times of two and a half hours or more aren't unusual. Cheap, but slow.

Hire car

Fine if you want a car for the whole trip. Bear in mind that parking in the centre of St Andrews is tight, especially near the Old Course in summer, and many golf groups would rather not drive after a long-haul flight.

For golf visitors

Golf groups make up a big share of this route, and the transfer is where trips most often go wrong. A few practical points:

• Count the clubs, not just the people. Four golfers with four tour bags and four suitcases won't fit in a saloon, and often not in a standard MPV either. Tell us how many bags there are when you book and we'll match the vehicle to it.
• Book both directions at once. Departure days after a tournament week get busy, and it's easier to lock in the return early.
• Think about side trips. Carnoustie, Kingsbarns and Gleneagles are all within reach. Adding a stop on the way from the airport is usually simpler than a separate trip later.
• Tee times are fixed, traffic isn't. If you're going straight from the airport to the first tee, leave generous slack. The Queensferry Crossing and the M90 can slow down at peak times.
